Wicked Little Letters (15)

A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a farcical and occasionally sinister scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger than fiction true story, the film follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all.

Out hunting, Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans. One among them transforms into the beautiful human Odette and he is immediately enamoured. But Odette is bound by a spell which keeps her captive as a swan during the day. Can Siegfried free her?

Swan Lake remains to this day one of the best-loved works in the classical ballet canon.

Weavers of Grass | In Association With D&G Arts Festival

In a multi-media performance award winning poet Chrys Salt and acclaimed saxophone player Richard Ingham explore the fascinating stories of Angus MacPhee and Ötzi the Iceman - two weavers of grass separated by 5000 years.

Angus MacPhee, a crofter from South Uist went off to war in 1939, fell ill with a form of schizophrenia and was sent to Craig Dunain, a hospital for the mentally ill outside Inverness. For the next fifty years Angus became electively mute, but using the ancient skills of the Islands went about weaving amazing garments from the grass and leaves he harvested from the hospital grounds.

Ötzi the Iceman is a well-preserved mummy of a man who lived over 5000 years ago. He is Europe’s oldest known natural human mummy. . Bronze Age man also wove garments out of grass, something Chrys discovered when researching Angus’ fascinating story. The exact circumstances of his Otzi’s death remain unknown.

A rich and enthralling exploration of mental health, the creative process, human frailty, and ancient traditions.

Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus (U) Monday Night Film Club

On March 28th, 2023, legendary composer Ryuichi Sakamoto passed away after his struggle against cancer. In the years leading up to his death, Sakamoto could no longer perform live. Single concerts, not to mention sprawling global tours, were too taxing. Despite this, in late 2022, Sakamoto mustered all of his energy to leave the world with one final performance: a concert film, featuring just him and his piano.

Curated by Sakamoto himself and presented in his chosen order, the twenty pieces performed in the film wordlessly narrate his life through his music. The selection spans his entire career, from his popstar Yellow Magic Orchestra period, to his magnificent Bertolucci film scores, to music from his meditative final album, 12.

Intimately filmed in a space he knew well, surrounded by his most trusted collaborators and directed by his son, Sakamoto bares his soul through his music, knowing this may be the last time that he can present his art.

Branded (12A) + Director Intro

We are delighted that director Pauline Amos will be here to introduce the film.

British Ukrainian production Branded ЗАТАВРОВАНА, an artist’s defiance, in the face of atrocity, to uphold Art and Freedom. Horrifying in its depiction of the persecution of artists in repressive regimes, the struggle of being confined as a prisoner of war is contrasted with the beauty of art and with a joyousness at its heart. Pauline Amos performs, with the voice of Kateryna Polishchuk - a Ukrainian soldier who was captured and held by the Russian army in Mariupol.

Artistic expression is not a luxury, it is a necessity. To repel the invader, the bond between artists and writers and freedom fighters must always be strong, with esprit de corps. The film has a powerful message that resonates with Ukraine and around the world: We fight For Freedom and Art is our Voice.
